What a zipline ride actually looks like
Speeds, harness positions, what the view does on a long span, and the parts of the ride that footage never manages to convey.
The first thirty seconds
Almost nothing that makes a zipline memorable happens on the cable. It happens on the platform: the harness check, the guide clipping you in, the moment you are asked to sit back into a harness while standing on a board six hundred feet above a valley floor. Riders who describe a course as frightening are almost always describing that, not the ride.
The ride itself is quiet. There is wind noise and the hum of the trolley on the cable, and on a long span the sound drops away as the gradient flattens. On a dual line with someone beside you, you can talk normally for most of it.
Position changes everything
Seated is the standard on canopy and coastal courses: upright in the harness, feet forward, hands off the cable. Prone, head-first, is what the record courses use, and on the same cable it is dramatically faster because the drag is a fraction of the seated figure. That is why a 2.8 km prone line quotes speeds a 2.5 km seated line cannot approach.
Speed also depends on you. A heavier rider is faster on the same line, which is why operators sometimes stage a light rider and a heavy one differently, and why the minimum weight exists at all. Below it, you stop short.
What the footage never shows
- Scale. A camera flattens height. A 600 ft drop looks like a hillside on video and does not on the platform.
- The braking. Most clips cut before the landing, which is the part that actually varies between courses and the part worth asking about. See the safety page on brake types.
- Waiting. A nine-line course is mostly platforms, short walks and hooking on. The flying is a small fraction of the elapsed time.

What to watch for in operator footage
Promotional clips are shot to sell the ride, which makes them useful for one thing only: seeing the terrain. Watch what is under the cable rather than the rider's face. A course over open pasture and a course over a river gorge produce completely different days even at identical line lengths, and the footage shows that honestly because it cannot hide it.
Ignore the speed claims. Speed on a zipline is a function of rider weight, harness position and cable tension on the day, so the number in a video is the best case for the heaviest rider in ideal conditions. The published maximum is worth reading as a ceiling and nothing more.
Filming it yourself
Most operators either prohibit hand-held cameras outright or require a head or chest mount, and the reason is the trolley: anything on a lanyard can swing into the moving parts. If footage matters to you, check the policy before booking rather than at the platform, because the answer is frequently no.
Common questions
Can you film on a zipline?
Usually only with a head or chest mount, and on several courses not at all. Hand-held cameras and phones on lanyards are the common prohibition, because anything loose can reach the trolley.
How fast do you actually go?
On long Hawaiian lines, typically in the 40 to 65 mph range depending on rider weight and position. Prone head-first courses go considerably faster on the same cable than seated ones.
Does the video make it look higher or lower than it is?
Lower. A camera flattens vertical distance, which is why a 600 ft drop reads as a hillside on screen and does not on the platform.
Can you talk to the person beside you?
On a dual line, yes, for most of the ride. Wind noise rises with speed but the trolley is quieter than people expect.
