The seven-line treetop course at Piiholo Ranch ran in eucalyptus forest in Upcountry Maui, above Makawao and well inland of the resorts. It is no longer operating, and its specifications stay on record because they are still the benchmark other Maui courses are read against.
What made it distinctive was altitude and tree cover. Most Hawaiian courses run over open slopes or reef, and the view is the ocean. This one ran through genuine upland forest, in cooler air, with tall trees under the platforms rather than grass. Its longest line was 2,800 ft and the maximum height 600 ft, both of them serious figures; the minimum age was eight and the rider weight range 75 lbs to 275 lbs.
With this course closed, Maui no longer has a zipline in real upland forest. The two remaining courses are both on the dry west side above the resorts, which is a different kind of day: bigger ocean views, less shade, less sense of being in a forest at all.
